Taj Bibi

Taj Begam Ji

A DESIRE TO SEE GOD

According to the legend, Taj Bibi once asked the โ€˜mullasโ€™ and โ€˜maulvisโ€™, โ€œKya Allah Ka Deedar Ho Sakta Hai?โ€ (Is it possible to see Allah)?

ย

She was assured that she could see Him if she went to Mecca on the Haj, even though everyone tried to discourage her saying she was too young. The journey to Mecca is for those in the last part of life, she was told. But nothing could stop her from her desire to see God. (Later on she became the devotee of Sri Krishna)

ย

Taj Bibi was an ardent devotee of Shri Krishna. She was born in the 17th century. Taj Bibiโ€™s fatherโ€™s name was Padna Khan. Taj Bibi was married to Emperor Akbar.

ย

The Kayamkhani Muslims of Fatehpuri and Jhunjhunu were converted Hindu Kshatriyas.

Shri Garchand Nahata, in his self-published book โ€˜Bibi-Baandi Ka Jhagdaโ€™ writes that impressed by Tajโ€™s beauty, the Mughal King Akbar married her. The most important work on Kayamkhani history, โ€˜Kayamkhan Rasoโ€™ also states that Fadan Khanโ€™s daughter was married to Akbar, however it doesnโ€™t mention the name.

These, and the belief held by many historians that Akbar was also inspired by Shri Krishna Bhakti, attest Tajโ€™s marriage with him.

MEETING WITH GOSAIN SHRI VITTHALNATH JI & A VISIT TO SRI DHAM VRINDAVAN

As per the gazetteer (Mathura) Akbar met the Goswamis of Vrindavan in the year 1672. This is corroborated in Goswami Gokulnathโ€™s โ€˜Bhaav Sindhuโ€™ which states that influenced by Sri Vitthalnathjiโ€™s righteousness Akbar made Him the honorary judge (nyayadhikari) for Braj.

ย

The mughal king also had a portrait of Sri Vitthalnathji in his palace. It was this picture that inspired Taj Bibi to accept Sri Vitthalnathji as spiritual master and dedicated her life to Sri Krishna Bhakti.

ย

Akbarโ€™s minister, Birbalโ€™s daughter Shobhavati and

Jaimalโ€™s daughter Lilavati, had unrelenting faith at the lotus feet of Shri Vitthalnath Ji, and both of them were the devotees of Shri Krishna. Both used to come to see Thakur Shrinathji (Sri Krishna) in Goverdhan in Braj.

ย

Lilavati and Shobhavati used to come to Taj Bibi. Taj Bibi had the opportunity to associate with these devotees of Sri Krishna and she used to hear the pastimes of Shri Krishna, due to which love towards Shri Krishna arose in Taj Bibiโ€™s heartโ€ฆโ€ฆ

ย

Taj Bibi had the opportunity to associate with these devotees of Sri Krishna and she used to hear the pastimes of Shri Krishna, due to which love towards Shri Krishna arose in Taj Bibiโ€™s heartโ€ฆ

ย

When Birbalโ€™s daughter Shobhavati used to come to meet Taj Bibi, she often used to talk about Vrindavan and Gosain Shri Vitthalnath Ji.

ย

Shobhavati told Taj Bibi the glory of Braj Dham and Gosain Shri Vitthalnath Ji so much that Taj Bibi started craving for Braj Dham and Gosain Shri Vitthalnath Jiโ€™s darshan.

ย

Emperor Akbar had great reverence for Gusain Shri Vitthalnath Ji in his heart and he used to come to Govardhan from time to time to have darshan of Gusain Ji.

ย

Once Taj Bibi came to Govardhan to see Gosain Ji with permission from Akbar. After having the darshan of Sri Gusain Ji, Taj Bibi stayed in Govardhan for some time and started participating in Gosain Jiโ€™s Satsang.

ย

Taj Bibi visited many places of pastimes and temples in Braj.

ย

Taj Bibi did not feel like going out of Braj after seeing the beautiful forests and bowers of Braj Dham but still, she returned to Delhi after a few days as per Akbarโ€™s orders.

DESIRE FOR THE PERMANENT RESIDENCE OF SHRI BRAJ DHAM

Taj Bibi did not feel like going out of Braj after seeing the beautiful forests and bowers of Braj Dham but still, she returned to Delhi after a few days as per Akbarโ€™s ordersโ€ฆโ€ฆ..

ย

Taj Bibi came back from Braj but her mind was wandering in Braj itself. She started chanting the name of Shri Krishna.

ย

Taj Bibi had brought with her a picture of Shri Krishna from Braj, and she started serving him by offering flowers and fruits and getting immersed in the beauty of all beautiful Sri Krishna.

ย

Now Taj Bibi started getting attached to the beautiful form of Shri Krishna and started thinking that โ€œHow to get the permanent stay of Braj Dham? How would I be able to get permanent residence in the Braj Dham? What should be done?โ€

ย

She thought that, โ€œIf I ask for this permission from Emperor Akbar, he will definitely not let me go.โ€ Thinking like this, once Taj Bibi came to Govardhan in Braj Dham to have Gosain Jiโ€™s darshan.

ย

After having the darshan of Sri Gosain Ji, Taj Bibi requested to Gosain Ji, โ€œYour Majesty, please do something that my husband fulfills my inner desire for giving me the permission of the permanent residence of the Braj Dham.โ€

ย

Taj Bibi requested to Gosain Ji, โ€œYour Majesty, please do something that my husband fulfills my inner desire for giving me the permission of the permanent residence of the Braj Dham.โ€

ย

Gosain Ji said, โ€œFollow every order of your husband, he will definitely fulfill your wish.โ€

ย

After this, Taj Bibi returned to Delhi and started following every order of Akbar.

ย

One day Akbar thought that Taj Bibi obeys my every command, I should also fulfill her wish. Thinking so, Akbar asked Taj Bibi โ€œWhat is your wish, please tell me. I will fulfill your wish.โ€

ย

Taj Bibi thought that if I ask for a permanent stay in Vrindavan, Akbar would refuse, so Taj Bibi used her intelligence and said โ€œMaharaj, I want to reside in the palace of Agra, please send me to the palace which is situated in Agra.โ€

ย

Akbar agreed to this and sent Taj Bibi to a palace of Agra by boat via the River Yamuna. Agra is situated on the border of Braj.

ย

Therefore, it became convenient to Taj Bibi as she now often came to visit places like Govardhan, Gokul, Vrindavan, Barsana, etc. and get herself immersed in the divine places of Braj Dham.

ย

Taj Bibi also used to come to listen to Gusain Shri Vitthalnath Jiโ€™s devotional discourses. She used to be immersed in the contemplation of the pastime she listened to in the discourse.

ย

Now Taj Bibiโ€™s heart started burning in the separation of Shri Krishna and she kept crying for the darshan of Shri Krishna. The dress of Taj Bibi had also changed.

ย

One day Emperor Akbar came to Agra.

ย

In Agra, Akbarโ€™s other wives complained to Akbar about Taj Bibi that โ€œTaj Bibi has changed completely, her dress has also changed. Leaving the verses of the Quran, she used to embrace the picture of Shri Krishna to her heart and kept crying. She always chants Krishna-Krishna. Her eating habits have also changed.

ย

Please pay attention to Taj Bibi or else people will start discussing this topic.โ€

ย

When Emperor Akbar heard the details of Taj Bibi from the queens, he was so impressed And he was very happy within his heart. Akbar did not say anything to Taj Bibi and did not stop her from anything.

PRAYERS FOR THE RESIDENCE IN SHRI BRAJ DHAM

The maid of Taj Bibi told Taj Bibi that โ€œAll the queens are complaining to Akbar against you.โ€

ย

Taj Bibi did not said anything to anyone and started praying to her beloved Shri Krishna โ€“

ย

Suno Dil Jani, Mere Dil Ki Kahani Tum,

Husn Ki Bikani, Badnami Bhi Sahungi Main. [1]

Dev Pooja Thani, Main Namaj Hun Bhulani,

Taje Kalama Kuran, Tere Gunan Gahungi Main. [2]

Sanwara Salauna Sarataj Sar Kulhe Daar,

Tere Neh Dag Mein Nidag Hvai Rahungi Main. [3]

Nand Ke Kumar Qurban Thani Surat Pai,

Haun to Mugalani Hinduani Hvai Rahungi Main. [4]

ย

Taj Bibi says that, O my lover Krishna, please listen to the story of my heart; your divine form has captivated my heart and now I have given up the decorum of society and ready to bear all the insults. Now, forgetting the โ€˜Namazโ€™ (Islamic prayers), May I worship your most beautiful form and forgetting the couplets of the Quran, O, Krishna, I will now recite your qualities exclusively.

ย

O, the crest jewel among all, the most revered one, Lord Krishna, I shall now become your selfless devotee.

O son of Nand, I sacrifice myself upon your beautiful face, although I am a Muslim by birth; but for You, My Krishna, I will become Hindu and ready to bear all opposition of societyโ€ฆ..

ย

Taj Bibi praying to her beloved Shri Krishna โ€“ O son of Nand, I sacrifice myself upon your beautiful face, although I am a Muslim by birth; but for You, My Krishna, I will become Hindu and ready to bear all opposition of society.

ย

Taj Bibi now started praying to Shri Krishna for a permanent stay in Vrindavan all the time. There was neither a devotional association nor kirtan in the palace, so Taj Bibi started feeling sad. She started remembering the temple of Braj and the saints. Taj Bibi also started taking very little food due to which her body started getting weak. A maid told about the condition of Taj Bibi to Akbar. Akbar came to Taj Bibi and asked her, โ€œYou have been sad and weeping for a long time, what are you sad about?โ€

ย

Taj Bibi said, โ€œI want to reside in Vrindavan, where I will receive daily association of devotees and will have darshan of saints.โ€

ย

Akbar said, โ€œYou have devotion to Shri Krishna in your heart, which is attained only by someone with great fortune, donโ€™t worry, I will make arrangements for your stay in Vrindavan, you go and reside in Vrindavan.โ€

GETTING THE RESIDENCE IN SHRI DHAM VRINDAVAN & A DEEP DESIRE OF THE HEART

Taj Bibi came to Vrindavan and started living in a hut. At that time the temple of Shri Govinddev Ji was famous in Vrindavan.

ย

Taj Bibi had a desire to have darshan of Shri Govinddev Ji, but she did not go inside the temple considering herself as a mleccha.

ย

Although Taj Bibi was not barred from coming to the temple. Taj Bibi used to return regularly after bowing on the door at the gate of Shri Govinddev temple.

ย

But there was a desire in the heart of Taj Bibi to have the darshan of Shri Govind Dev Ji.

ย

She used to think that โ€œI cannot enter the temple with this mlechha body, and I may never get the darshan of Shri Govinddev Ji.

ย

But the Lord is the knower of everything, He knows the desire of my heart. When the Lord will inspire the heart of a priest and the priest will call me inside the temple, then I will get the good fortune to have darshan of the Lord.โ€

ย

Thinking like this, she would come to the temple gate every day, pay obeisance on the door and return to her hut. Many days passed by doing this, but none of the priests called her inside the temple.

ย

One day Taj Bibi came to Govinddev temple and after bowing on the doorway, started saying to Shri Govinddev Ji with some anger, โ€œYou are the ocean of mercy, then why such cruelty to me? Can I not even have your darshan! So now I will never come to your temple. I will not even take food and water until you come and give your darshan. Saying this to the Lord, Taj Bibi returned to her hut.

ย

3 days had passed but Taj Bibi did not took food and water. Her body became weak but she kept on weeping remembering Shri Krishna.

GETTING THE DIVINE DARSHAN OF SRI KRISHNA

In the middle of the night, Taj Bibi started having unbearable pain of separation. At the same time she heard a solemn voice โ€œTaj, look, I have brought you food and water.โ€

ย

When she turned and saw, her hut was filled with blue light and in that blue light, she saw Shri Govinddev Ji standing with food and water. Taj Bibi fainted after seeing Shri Govind Dev Ji. Shri Govinddev Ji kept food and water there and disappeared.

ย

When Taj Bibi regained consciousness, she started thinking about whether it was a dream or truth. A divine fragrance pervaded the entire hut. When Taj Bibi looked on the ground, she saw the same plate of food and the jar of water which was in the Lordโ€™s hands.

ย

When Taj Bibi regained consciousness, she started thinking about whether it was a dream or truth. A divine fragrance pervaded the entire hut. When Taj Bibi looked on the ground, she saw the same plate of food and the jar of water which was in the Lordโ€™s hands.

ย

Taj Bibi understood that the Lord had really come, she thought that it was because of my vow that the Lord had to suffer to come here at night. Taj felt very remorseful. Giving her patience, Taj accepted Lordโ€™s prasad. Taj Bibi had never experienced such a taste of Prasad in her life. Her body began to thrill and her heart was filled with a renewed enthusiasm.

ย

Taj Bibi started getting visions of the divine pastimes in her heartโ€ฆ

ย

Taj Bibi wrote those pastimes in verses. The verse of Shri Krishnaโ€™s Darshan is as follows โ€“

ย

Chhail Jo Chhabila, Sab Rang Mein Rangila

Bada Chitt Ka Adeela, Kahoon Devaton Se Nyara Hai. [1]

ย

Maal Gale Sohai, Naak-Moti Set Jo Hai Kaan,

Kundal Man Mohai, Lal Mukut Sir Dhaara Hai. [2]

ย

Dushtajan Maare, Sab Sant Jo Ubaare Taaj,

Chitt Mein Nihaare Pran, Preeti Karan Vaara Hai. [3]

ย

Nandaju Ka Pyara, Jin Kans Ko Pachhaara,

Vah Vrindavan Vaara, Krishn Saaheb Hamara Hai. [4]

ย

Meaning โ€“ Krishna is very cheeky, colorful & joyful, very adamant, and unique among all the gods.

ย

His neck is garnished with a garland, nose is embellished with nose-pearl, whose ears are adorned with captivating earrings and His head is decorated with a beautiful crown.

ย

He destroyed all the wicked ones, and is the protector of saints.

ย

He is full of love and the Supreme appreciator of devotional sentiment.

ย

He is the charming Nandakumar who defeated the cruel Kans. He belongs to Vrindavan, and His name is Krishna. He is the Lord of my Life, says Taj [Bibi].

SEARCHING FOR THE BHOGA PLATE

The next morning, in the temple of Shri Govinddev Ji, the priests started searching for the plate of Lordโ€™s bhog (food offering) and the jar of water, but no one could find it even after searching for so much time.

ย

The priests of the temple were astonished that if the temple was closed, then how could the plate of bhog and the jar of water disappeared, What has happened? The priests kept on wondering and wondering.

ย

Here in the hut, Taj cleaned the plate of bhog and the jar of water with love and sent it to the temple by the hand of the maid.

ย

As and when the maid reached the temple with a plate of bhog and a jar of water, the priests of the temple were stunned by seeing that same plate and jar which is used in the service of Shri Govinddev ji.

ย

The priest was all surprised and with the astonishment asked the maid that โ€œHow did you get the plate of bhog and the jar of water of Shri Govinddev ji?โ€

ย

The maid replied, โ€œQueen Taj Bibi has sent this.โ€

ย

The priests came to Taj Bibi and with the wonder started asking Taj, โ€œHow did the plate of bhog and the jar of water come to you?โ€

ย

Taj narrated the whole divine story which happened with her through Sri Krishna.

ย

The priests began applauding the great fortune of Taj Bibi that Sri Govinddev Ji himself has came and given the divine darshan to her along with the divine prasad he has given to Taj.

ย

This story gradually spread in the entire Braj Dham. People from far and wide started coming to see Taj Bibi, due to which Taj started getting distracted in her devotional service.

ย

After a few days, Taj crossed the Yamuna and went to Gokul Mahavan, and spent the rest of her life thereโ€ฆโ€ฆ.

A DIVINE INCIDENT

Taj was so attached to Braj-Gokul that she commissioned a settlement named โ€˜Gokulpuraโ€™ in Agra where she lived.

ย

It is a living memorial of her even today. For a Vaishnava, the end of journey in this material world is merging with the supreme object of devotion, Parabrahma Shri Krishna.

ย

Drowned in the bliss of her belovedโ€™s vision, Taj Bibi lost all bodily sense one day. She ran to catch her beloved who was engaged in playing Holi.

ย

The maidservants tried to stop her only to realise later that Taj had left the body, and what lay in the lap of maidservants was merely her mortal self.

ย

Taj Bibi left her body in Gokul Mahavan and attained Shri Radha Krishnaโ€™s pastimes in the form of a Gopi. This is where Taj Bibiโ€™s samadhi is located.

ย

Her โ€˜makbaraโ€™ (tomb) was erected in Gokulโ€™s Ramanreti, the place she was most attached to.

ย

Taj Bibi is among the most revered saints of Pushtimarg Sampradaaye.
